One of the main functions of the priests in the Old Testament was to proclaim the blessing of the Lord on the people and to bless them. In the New Testament we see how Jesus loved to bless the little children and how Paul often pronounced a blessing over those ministering with him. To bless others and to be a blessing to people should be an integral part of every believer’s character and conduct.
The Bible states more than 50 times that God blesses us so we can be a blessing to others. There are many ways in which we can be a blessing to others. We can give gifts, or we can help people in need, in trouble, in pain or in sickness. We can also be a blessing to people by showing them gratitude, love, compassion and patience – all of these are fruit of the Holy Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-26).
The priests … shall step forward,
for the LORD your God has chosen them to minister
and to pronounce blessings in the name of the LORD.
Another way to bless others is to speak words of blessing over them in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The passage in Deuteronomy 21:5 explains how the priests were chosen to minister to God and to pronounce blessings in His name. When we pronounce a blessing in the name of the Lord, it is not only we who are blessing others, but it is the Lord blessing! Proverbs 10:22 explains this well: The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it. These verses show us that it is possible to cultivate a lifestyle of blessing in our walk with the Lord. Following are some practical guidelines to help you start blessing others first thing in the morning and throughout the day!
