Many believers face real pressure concerning finances, provision, work, debt, food, housing, health and daily responsibilities. Yet Scripture continually reminds us that God is our Father, our Provider and our Shepherd. He knows what we need before we ask Him, and He calls us to seek first His kingdom, to walk in obedience, to live with contentment and to trust Him with every practical need.
Praying about financial, material and physical needs is not merely asking God for more. It is an invitation to bring our hearts, priorities, stewardship, fears and future under His lordship. Money must never take the place that belongs to God. Our security is not in possessions, income, people, employment, savings or earthly systems, but in the faithful care of our heavenly Father.
As we pray the Word, we learn to stand on God’s promises, repent where needed, practise wisdom, give faithfully, live simply and trust Him for daily bread. These Scriptures help us to pray with faith, humility and obedience, knowing that God is able to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Practical guidelines
- Make a conscious decision to live below your income as far as it is possible. This helps to create space, peace and wisdom in your finances, rather than living under constant pressure.
- Save part of your income, no matter how difficult it might be. Even a small amount saved faithfully over time can become a blessing and a safeguard for future needs.
- Live simply and be content. Decide on the basics you need to live on, the things you cannot do without, and do not allow neighbours, friends, social pressure or advertisements to decide for you how you should live and what you need. Contentment protects the heart from comparison and helps us recognise the Lord’s daily provision.
- Willingly give a tenth of your income for the work of the Lord. Do not try to hold back what belongs to Him. God promises His blessing to those who give their tithes (Malachi 3:10). To rob God of what belongs to Him is a greater risk than robbing a bank, and in addition, we also lose out on the blessing of walking in obedience, trust and His faithful care. Martin Luther said there are three things in your life that need to be converted: your heart, your mind and your purse. Billy Graham also said that if you can get your attitude towards money right, almost all of the other things in your life will fall into place as well.
- Do financial planning for your future. In the same way that you would carefully plan any important project, you should also plan your finances with prayer, wisdom and responsibility. Make use of a financial advisor or broker if you are unsure how to do it.
- Remember that God said He would supply all our needs, not necessarily everything we would like to have. This helps us to pray with faith, but also with surrender, contentment and trust in His wisdom.
Overview of the Scriptures
The following Scriptures show us several important truths about God’s provision.
- Provision is connected to relationship with God, obedience to His Word and seeking Him above all else.
- These passages remind us that God provides daily bread, protects His people in times of lack and cares for the needs of His children.
- Scripture teaches us to handle money with wisdom, generosity and integrity. We are called to give, save, avoid unnecessary debt, pay what we owe, reject dishonest gain and live with contentment.
As you pray through these verses, ask the Lord to strengthen your faith, purify your attitude towards money, give you wisdom in stewardship and provide for every real need according to His will.
Scriptures to pray
‘If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments, and perform them then I will give you rain in its season, the land shall yield its produce, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. Your threshing shall last till the time of vintage, and the vintage shall last till the time of sowing; you shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. (Leviticus 26:3-5).
“And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.” (Deuteronomy 8:18).
Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And the Lord will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. (Deuteronomy 28:1, 11, 12).
He sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God; and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him prosper. (2 Chronicles 26:5).
Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. A little that a righteous man has Is better than the riches of many wicked. The Lord knows the days of the upright, And their inheritance shall be forever. They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, And in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread. (Psalm 37:3, 16, 18-19, 25).
These all wait for You, That You may give them their food in due season. What You give them they gather in; You open Your hand, they are filled with good. (Psalm 104:27-28).
He has given food to those who fear Him; He will ever be mindful of His covenant. (Psalm 111:5).
Honor the Lord with your possessions,
And with the firstfruits of all your increase;
So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine.
(Proverbs 3:9-10).
For God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind. (Ecclesiastes 2:26).
He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, He who despises the gain of oppressions, Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, And shuts his eyes from seeing evil: He will dwell on high; His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks;
Bread will be given him, His water will be sure. (Isaiah 33:15-16).
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21).
“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:25-26,31-33).
“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:11).
“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” (Luke 6:38).
“Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds?” (Luke 12:24).
“If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?” (Luke 12:28).
“For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Luke 12:30-31).
“And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:23-24).
Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor. Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. (Romans 13:7-8).
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8).
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:11-13).
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19).
…casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7).
