I once read an article about unanswered prayer and one particular sentence stuck with me all these years. The author wrote: “If the prayers you pray do not move your own heart, do you think it will move the heart of God?” He was addressing the matter that, unless our prayers are filled with a deep sincere passion and desire for God to answer, they will not bear much fruit. James 5:16 confirms this thought: “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much!”  It set me thinking about the requirement of having a passionate heart in prayer.

There are wonderful treasures from the book of Psalms that you can study and turn into simple prayers before the Lord to cultivate a passionate, pure heart in prayer. 

 

I have quieted my soul…

 

1. Calm and quiet soul
Psalm 131:2 – Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul…

2. Continually in the Word
Psalm 119:117 – Hold me up, and I shall be safe, and I shall observe Your statutes continually. Psalm 119:164 – Seven times a day I praise You, because of Your righteous judgments.

3. Freewill offerings of praise and prayer
Psalm 119:108 – Accept, I pray, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me Your judgments.

4. Inclined to do what is right
Psalm 119:112 – I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes forever, to the very end.

5. Choose to believe and not doubt
Psalm 119:30 – I have chosen the way of truth; Your judgments I have laid before me.

6. Cling to the truth
Psalm 119:31- I cling to Your testimonies; O LORD, do not put me to shame! Also Romans 12:9  Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.

 

I will not forget Your word.

 

7. Delight and do not forget
Psalm 119:16 – I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.

8. Restrain from doing evil
Psalm 119:101 – I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep Your word.

9. Longing
Psalm 119:20 – My soul breaks with longing for Your judgments at all times. Psalm 107:9 – For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.

10. Cry out to God
Psalm 130:1 – Out of the depths I have cried to You, O LORD.

11. Run the course
Psalm 119:32 – I will run the course of Your commandments, for You shall enlarge my heart.

 

I shall not be moved!

 

12. Set God before you, not problems
Psalm 16:8 – I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.

13. Be in awe
Psalm 119:161 – Princes persecute me without a cause, but my heart stands in awe of Your word.

14. Sow in tears
Psalm 126:5 – Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy. Also Joh 11:35 – Jesus wept.

15. Fear God alone
Psalm 112:7 – He will not be afraid of evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. Isa 66:5 – Hear the word of the LORD, You who tremble at His word.

16. Wait prayerfully
Psalm 130:5-6 – I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in His word I do hope.

 

I will obey God’s word.

 

17. Obey without delay
Psalm 119:60 – I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments.

18. Your whole life
Psalm 116:2 – Because He has inclined His ear to me, therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.

19. Steadfast
Psalm 108:1 – O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.

20. Without retaliation
Psalm 109:4 – In return for my love they are my accusers, but I give myself to prayer.

21. Stand up and intervene
Psalm 106:30 – Then Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was stopped. And that was accounted to him for righteousness to all generations forevermore.

 

Search me, O God.

 

22. Allow correction
Psalm 139:23-24 – Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

23. Pay your vows
Psalm 116:14 – I will pay my vows to the LORD now in the presence of all His people.

24. Lift up your hands
Psalm 141:2 – Let my prayer be set before You as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

25. Pour out your heart
Psalm 142:2 – I pour out my complaint before Him; I declare before Him my trouble.
