Have you recently lost a loved one? Or just heard from the doctor that you have an incurable disease? Or perhaps your child has been in a terrible accident and is in ICU? Or your spouse has left you for someone else? Finding ourselves in any such situation can be a very traumatic experience and cause us to wonder; where was God when this happened?
However unreal it may feel to you in such a moment, just know that God is there. He is Immanuel, God with us. Amid the distressing circumstances surrounding the victims of trauma, God is always there to provide the courage to speak out and seek help. He is always present to offer healing and comfort to those who are traumatised and seeking His face prayerfully in their distress.
Following are some thoughts to contemplate, firstly from the point of view of your personal relationship with the Lord, and secondly how to pray for someone when they experience trauma.
Your response when experiencing trauma
The presence of Jesus: If you are experiencing trauma and pain, look to Jesus’ suffering to help you see His presence amid your confusion and pain (Hebrews 12:2-3).
Seek empathy: Empathy from loved ones or friends calms your distress with an embrace of God’s compassion that enables you to release distress and gain new strength and perspective (2 Corinthians 1:4).
Face your feelings: Like king David in the Old Testament, call out to God and tell Him your deepest pain. Ask Him why things are so bad – express all your feelings, pour out your whole heart to Him (Psalm 13).
Self-care: Take steps that will help you heal. Are you getting enough rest? Eating well? Self-care is an essential step towards restoration.
Lean into God: Lean into God for He works all things together for His purpose. Our faith enables us to cling to hope and abide in Jesus when everything seems hopeless (Hebrews 4:15-16).
What to pray for someone who experiences trauma
Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6).
Father, You are our Deliverer and Sustainer. I pray for those suffering trauma, who are filled with confusion, anxiety and fear. I ask that You strengthen them and fill their emptiness with the fullness of Your Spirit of love. Set them free from fear and restore them to wholeness.
God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13b).
Father, You know everyone who is suffering from trauma and you also know what they have gone through. Some people have distressing emotional pains that refuse to go away. I pray that You will bind up their wounds, heal their heart and every brokenness within.
Therefore the LORD waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the LORD is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. (Isaiah 30:18).
Father, You are a friend to the meek and lowly. I pray for all traumatised people who feel that they have no one they can confide in. Will You be their closest friend and comforter. Provide for others to come alongside them with loving care, wisdom and practical help. Lord, heal their brokenness.
But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. (Psalm 59:16).
Father, traumatised people may have no strength or will to fight or seek a way out. Give them Your strength and let them find refuge in You – their strong fortress. Open their hearts to experience Your steadfast love and abundant grace daily, so that their hope will be restored.
Wait on God
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. (Romans 15:13).
Father, help every traumatised and hurting person to wait patiently on You; to abide and rest in Your love while waiting for the manifestation of their healing and full recovery from trauma. Heal their shattered hearts and restore the joy of salvation to them.
Love of Christ
May you have the strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:18-19).
Father, I pray for those recovering from trauma to experience the love of Christ. Flood every corner of their being with Your soothing balm of love. Root out the negative emotions inside of them and fill the void in their souls with Your love and peace, hope and Your presence.
Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. (Colossians 3:13).
Father, please take away the pain and bitter feelings of anger and betrayal in the heart of every person who has been traumatised by the actions of others. Teach them how to truly forgive and love the same way that Jesus loves and forgives us despite our shortcomings.
All things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:15-16).
Father, thank You for Your Word that tells us in Philippians 4:6 that we should be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, we should make our requests known to You. Thank you for hearing my supplications on behalf of those who suffer from trauma.
