Discovering God’s will is one of the greatest questions every Christian faces. Why am I here? What is my purpose? How do I know if I am truly walking in the plan God designed for me?
Scripture reminds us that life is not about personal ambition or comfort, but about glorifying God and seeking His kingdom first. To know His will is not a mystery reserved for a few, it is an invitation for every believer to walk closely with Him, to hear His voice and to live in obedience.
Praying for God’s will requires a willing heart, a surrendered spirit and a daily commitment to follow wherever He leads.
Heart posture before you pray
- Clean Hands: Take a few minutes and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any known, unconfessed sin. Confess it and turn from it.
- Quick Obedience: Commit to do whatever the Lord shows you and to obey immediately.
- Settled Surrender: Do not ask for God’s will if you are not willing to do it. Decide beforehand that your answer is “Yes, Lord.”
What to pray
1. To know God personally – Ask for a deeper revelation of God’s character, His works and His heart toward you. Knowledge about God is not enough, pursue relationship (Ephesians 1:17)
2. Be filled with the Holy Spirit daily – Pray for the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge and the fear of the Lord (Ephesians 5:18, Isaiah 11:2).
3. Anointing to fulfil your calling – Ask for the anointing of the Holy Spirit to serve fruitfully in God’s kingdom (Luke 4:18-19).
4. God’s dream and calling – Ask the Lord to reveal His calling and vocation for your life, and to order your days according to His book (Psalm 139:16-17).
5. Christ in your home – Pray that your marriage and family glorify God, that you show mercy and grace to your spouse and children, and that you carry the mind of Christ toward them (Ephesians 5:21-28, 6:4).
6. Hunger for the Word – Pray for desire, insight and illumination in Scripture, that you may live by every Word from God (Deuteronomy 8:3).
7. Kingdom priorities – Ask the Lord to set His priorities in your life, and for wisdom and power to live accordingly (Matthew 6:33).
8. Holiness and victory over temptation – Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal sin, to strengthen you to resist and to walk in purity (1 Corinthians 10:13).
9. Deliverance from evil and from bitterness – Pray for protection from the evil one, for freedom from pain and for a gracious heart that does not cause pain in others (1 Chronicles 4:10).
10. Health and wise habits – Ask for health, a disciplined lifestyle and sound stewardship of your body.
11. A life of waiting on the Lord – Pray for grace to be still before the Lord, to wait for His timing and not to move ahead of His leading (Psalm 37:7, Psalm 130:6).
12. Growth in love, grace and surrender – Pray to die to self, to grow in holiness and to mature in the will of God, fully assured (Colossians 4:12).
13. Word-governed living – Ask to live under the Holy Spirit’s control, grounded in Scripture for all thinking and doing (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
14. Perseverance under pressure – Pray for strength, endurance and patience in every circumstance, holding fast to your confidence in Christ (Colossians 1:11, Hebrews 3:14).
15. Truth, righteousness, justice and mercy – Ask God to build your life on His foundation, learning to love with grace and faithfulness (Psalm 89:14).
16. Knowing the Lord Jesus above all – Pray that your greatest desire is to know the Lord Jesus, to be conformed to His character and to manifest His works (Philippians 3:7-10).
17. Blessed to be a blessing – Ask God to bless you so that you may be a blessing to others and to the nations (Genesis 12:2).
18. Cheerful generosity – Pray to be a faithful tither and a joyful giver, trusting God’s abundant provision (Malachi 3:10).
19. Contentment – Ask for a content heart that rests in what God provides (1 Timothy 6:8).
20. Fruitfulness in service – Pray that your life will bear lasting fruit for the glory of God, that your words, actions and influence will draw others to Christ, and that you will complete the work He has given you (John 15:5,16).
A prayer
Father, I ask for Your mercy and favour, that I may grow strong in the Holy Spirit. May I increase in godly wisdom and spiritual authority, and may Your grace be upon me. Grant that I grow in wisdom and in favour with God and men, so that I may do Your work. Fill me with boldness to witness and empower me to fulfil Your will. In the Name of the Lord Jesus, Amen.
