Jesus Christ is God and Lord. He deserves our worship and adoration. In Matthew 28:18 Jesus said, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”

To study the “sayings of Jesus” is a most blessed way of engaging Scripture. Of all these, there are the I AM statements which Jesus made, mostly speaking in analogies, word pictures and parables. These statements help us understand who He is, why He came and what He has done for us. Let us prayerfully meditate on these statements and cement their foundational truths into our hearts, minds and souls.

Seeking Jesus’ face by praying His Word is one sure way to draw closer to Him – Jesus is the Living Word! (John 1:1).  The Word of God is also the Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17). You can use the following as basic prayers to help you pray through the I AM statements of Jesus from Scripture. These statements are so rich that you may want to come back to them again and again – and phrase your own prayers as you worship I AM.

1. I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE (JOHN 6:35)
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. (John 6:35).

Lord Jesus, as I partake of the bread and wine, I partake of You. They who come to You will never be hungry or thirsty again. I will daily and prayerfully present myself before Your mercy seat like this.  Thank you for pouring out Your life as a drink offering; for giving Your body as a sin offering. Thank you for bringing heaven to earth through the Cross.

2. I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD (JOHN 8:12)
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.” (John 8:12).

Lord Jesus, I worship You as the Light of the world. There is no other way to everlasting light and life except through You. Teach me to follow You in all your ways. Teach me to walk in the light in everything that I do, say and contemplate – let the meditations of my heart be acceptable in Your light! Lead me in Your ways, to walk in the light of true everlasting life.

3. I AM THE DOOR (JOHN 10:7)
Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. (John 10:7).

Lord Jesus, when You said ‘most assuredly’, You emphasised this truth. You are the door to the Father. Through You I enter into the Kingdom of the Father. As You establish Your character in me, I can enter into the presence of the Father more freely and more boldly. Thank you for the Cross which made all this possible. I worship You as the door. Teach me the ways of true surrender.

4. I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD (JOHN 10:14-15)
I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep and am known by My own. (John 10:14).

Lord Jesus, when life’s pathway becomes bumpy and difficult, I struggle to keep faith that You are the good Shepherd. I choose to believe that You are always good. It is Your goodness that leads to repentance. It is Your goodness that sustains my life. I worship You as a good leader, a Shepherd with good intentions towards His sheep. Lead me to waters of rest. Lead me into hope and into faith. Lead me in the ways of the Father, so my life may be pleasing to Him.

5. I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE (JOHN 11:25)
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. (John 11:25).

Lord Jesus, to be resurrected with You and through You remains a wonderful mystery. How I love the way You love me! Therefore I choose to believe You – whether I perish or not – that You ARE the resurrection and eternal life. Those who remain in You will live forever. Every time I use the bread in communion, I choose resurrection. Every time I use the wine in communion, I choose life over the death of sin. You are my all in all. Holy Spirit, please remind me daily that Christ lives in me as the Resurrected One, holding everlasting and victorious resurrection power.

6. I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE (JOHN 14:6)
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:6).

Lord Jesus, You lead me through the outer court of sin and repentance. You are the way. You lead me through the holy of holies of living rightly, holy and feasting on the bread of life. You are the truth. Your death on the Cross lead me into the holiest of all – complete surrender at the mercy seat. You are the life. Only when I die to self, can I truly live. You are that life everlasting. Lead me therefore into the fullness of life in the Father.

7. I AM THE TRUE VINE (JOHN 15:1)
“I am a true sprouting vine, and the farmer who tends the vine is my Father. He cares for the branches connected to me by lifting and propping up the fruitless branches and pruning every fruitful branch to yield a greater harvest. (John 15:1-2, TPT).

Lord Jesus, You are so filled with life everlasting. Whosoever depends on You will not die, but live forever! Thank you for sustaining my spiritual life with such tender loving care. Thank you, Heavenly Father, for not leaving me the way I am, but ever helping me onwards on the journey of growing into a spotless Bride for Jesus. Let every unfruitful branch be removed. Let every fruitful branch be pruned to bear more fruit. Teach me to abide in You in all my ways.

8. I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, EVEN TO THE END OF THE AGE (MAT.28:20)
I am with you always, even to the end of the age (Mat.28:20b).

Lord Jesus, You are Emanuel, the great I AM, God with us. From the Beginning You were there. Until the end You will be there. No one who calls upon Your name will be left desolate. Even in the wilderness You will sustain and uphold me. I put my hope in the Everlasting One. The One who is always with me, even to the end of my own life and into eternity.
