Overcoming anxiety and fear

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Are you anxious about something? When you dwell on that anxiety long enough, you will start to worry about it. If you let these thoughts go unchecked, they will multiply. Eventually it will turn into fear and can even lead to depression.

How should we fight against anxious thoughts? Philippians 4:5-7 gives us the answer:

  • Know that God is near.
  • Take everything to the Lord in prayer with thanksgiving.
  • Then the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds.
  • Think about the things above – do not dwell on the anxiety.

Joseph Scriven wrote a hymn in 1855 called “What a friend we have in Jesus.” The first verse says, “O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.” Your lack of peace and pain are not yours to bear alone. You have Jesus as your friend. He has died on the cross for you, so that you don’t have to carry any burdens. Jesus, on the cross, said “Tetelestai” (it is finished) – which means that your burdens are no longer your problem. It is his to carry. So, when you pray, leave those burdens at the foot of the cross and walk away. Don’t go back and pick it up again. Jesus is handling it – trust Him.

Psalm 94:19 says, “In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul.” These comforts are God’s peace, the peace that transcends all human understanding. God offers it free of charge to us. Will you accept it?

“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:6-7). Do not be anxious about anything – because God cares for you! God knows everything. He knows your deepest thoughts and fears. His solution is for you to bring all of your burdens to Him in daily prayer. You need to spend time in his presence in order for his peace to overwhelm you and for all your anxiety, worry and fear to melt away.

When you are troubled by any form of anxiety, spend much time in thanksgiving, praise and worship. Spend much time to read through the Psalms. It will calm your heart. Then pause and be still and listen to what He tells you. And afterwards – do what God asked you to do.
