Mobilising, training and equipping Christians for prayer

God created every person with a specific creative purpose in mind. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that each one of us understands why we are here and what God desires to do with our lives. He tells us clearly in several places in Scripture what His purpose for us is. That is why we should study the Word and understand why God created us.

We must align or synchronise our thoughts, behaviour and relationship with God and people to God’s revelation in Scripture. In prayer, we must get our lives in line with God’s will and His creative purposes.

Get practical

  1. The prayer below has been compiled using verses from Scripture that focus on God’s purpose and plan for our lives.
  2. Pray this prayer every day for the next five days and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you how it applies to your life.
  3. Each time after you have prayed this prayer:
    • confess things in your life that you know are not in line with God’s creative purpose for your life,
    • write down what you prayed about in your journal and reflect on it and
    • address those things which need to be changed to get your life in line with God’s purposes.

A Scripture-based prayer

Eternal Father, we confess that You created us to be fruitful and to increase in number, fill the earth and rule over it. You appointed us to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground (Gen.1:26-28). You made us a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned us with glory and honour. You made us rulers over the works of Your hands (Ps. 8:5-7). You made us Your representatives on earth and created us in Your image. We pray that You will make this a reality in the lives of Your children.

Father, You chose us in Christ before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in Your sight. In love, You predestined us to be adopted as Your sons and daughters through Jesus Christ, in accordance with Your pleasure and will. You made known to us the mystery of Your will according to Your good pleasure, which You purposed in Christ. Your purpose was to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, Christ. Through Your Son, Jesus Christ, we were also chosen to be part of Your family, as You predestined it according to Your plan, which You worked out in conformity with the purpose of Your will (Eph. 1:4-5; 10-11). We pray that You will accomplish Your purposes with each one of your children, as You planned from before time.

We pray that, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, as well as to every nation, language and tribe, according to Your eternal purpose, which You accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord (Eph. 3:10-11). May the word of Christ dwell richly in us, as we teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as we sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in our hearts to God (Col. 3:16). We pray that every believer will put on the new self, which is being renewed into the image of Christ and will come into the fullness of the knowledge of God so that Christ will be visible in the church (Col. 3:10). As we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, may we now also bear the likeness of the Man from heaven (1 Cor.15:49).

Father, it was Your intention from the beginning to reconcile us to Yourself through Christ and to give us the ministry of reconciliation. We declare that the ministry of reconciliation is that You reconciled the world to Yourself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. We, therefore, commit ourselves to be Christ’s ambassadors, and we plead in the Name of Jesus Christ, that people will accept the reconciliation accomplished for them (2 Cor. 5:18-20). We pray that, through the blood of Your Son shed on the Cross, peace will be restored on earth, and that You will reconcile everything on earth and in heaven with Yourself to present us holy in Your sight, without blemish and free from condemnation (Col.1:20-22).

We pray for the earth to be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea (Hab. 2:14). Display Your power that Your Name may be known and proclaimed in all the earth (Rom. 9:17).

Father, we pray that You will bless the church, as children of Abraham, so that the church may be a blessing to all the nations of the earth (Gen. 12:2-3).

Father, we pray that the church will understand her calling to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations. Glorious Father, we pray that You will give us, Your church, the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that we may know You better. We pray also that the eyes of our hearts may be enlightened in order that we may know the hope to which You have called us, and the riches of Your glorious inheritance in the saints, and Your incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the working of Your mighty strength, as in which you exerted in Christ when You raised Him from the dead and seated Him at Your right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. You placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over the church (Eph. 1:16-22). Father God, You raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus (Eph. 2:6), and we know that in all things You work for the good of those who love You, who have been called according to Your purpose. For those You foreknew You also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of Your Son, that He might be the firstborn among many believers. Those You predestined, You also called; those You called, You also justified; those You justified, You also glorified (Rom. 8:29-30).

Father, You have made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve You, and we will reign on the earth (Rev. 5:10). We are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that we may declare the praises of Christ, who called us out of darkness into His wonderful light. Once we were not a people, but now we are the people of God; once we had not received mercy, but now we have received mercy (1 Pet. 2:9-10). Father, let the Holy Spirit come upon us that we may receive power to be Your witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). Lord Jesus, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to You, and You promised to be with us to the very end of the age. Please make the whole church willing to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything You have commanded us (Mat. 28:18-20). We pray that You will present us to Yourself a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless (Eph. 5:27). For we are Your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which You prepared in advance for us to do (Eph. 2:10). We pray that every believer will love You, our God, with all their heart, soul, mind and strength (Mat. 22:37-38. Lord, we pray that You will pour out Your love into our hearts, through Your Holy Spirit so that Your love may be revealed to the world through the church (Rom. 5:5).

We pray for the salvation of the Jews, that You will have mercy on them and reveal Jesus Christ as the Messiah to them and give them the understanding that salvation comes through Him alone; there is no other Messiah yet to come (Rom. 11:25-27; 10:1-4. We pray for the peace of Jerusalem because we know it is Your will (Ps. 122:6). May Israel be restored to be Your people for Your renown, praise and honour (Jer. 13:11).

Father we pray for the restoration of marriages. Your intention for marriage is godly offspring who will glorify You (Mal.2:15).

We pray that the church will speak Your Word with great boldness. Stretch out Your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the Name of Your Son, Jesus Christ (Acts 4:29-31). We pray that You will work through and in Your body, the church, through signs, wonders, various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit, distributed according to Your will (Heb.2:4).

Almighty God, we ask in the Name of Jesus for the destruction of the works of the evil one. The reason the Son of God appeared and rose to life victorious was to destroy the devil’s work (1 Joh. 3:8). Father, Your Son became flesh, that by His death, He might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil (Heb. 2:14. Now, may we, Your church, rise up and continue the work of Christ, bringing glory and honour to Your Name now and forever more. Amen.
