Mobilising, training and equipping Christians for prayer

What can be a greater blessing for a child than having a parent that prays for him or her? Use these practical guidelines and Scriptures to pray for your children, expecting God to work in their lives.

Practical guidelines

Regularly bless your children. Use the prayer in 1 Chron.4:9-10 or Num.6:23-27. You can pray it for them or you can pray it as a blessing.

Pray Gods purpose for them. Pray that they will understand God’s purpose for them and why He created them.

Pray for your children according to Gods promises, not according to what is wrong in their lives or according to your expectations for their lives. God has committed Himself to honour His promises.

Do not complain and grumble when you pray for your children. Parents often complain and grumble when praying for their children. Such prayers are born out of unbelief and a lack of faith. Pray and trust God.

Do not allow bitterness or unforgiveness towards your children. Ask God for His love in your heart; unconditional love, love regardless of what happened in the past, love in spite of how your child behaves.

Rather discuss your children with God before asking advice from other people. Parents often discuss the behaviour and problems of their children with other people, ask for help, complain about their children, read books on raising children and seek professional help, but do not pray for them. Be sure to pray for your children.

Pray for your children, do not accuse them. Your role is to come before God as a priest to plead for grace and mercy. The devil is the accuser. If you accuse your children before God and tell Him of all the wrong things they do, you are doing exactly what the devil does.

Do not try to do the work of the Holy Spirit. You cannot convict your child of sin. You cannot change your child’s heart. That is the work of the Holy Spirit.

Do not be in a hurry with your child. Do not expect your child to change overnight. Most things develop during a long process of change. (Do you remember that it was the same when you were a child?) As parents our responsibility to God is to produce godly offspring. (Mal.2:15)

Simple prayers are good enough. Sometimes a single sentence prayed several times during the day is enough. Do not pray complex prayers. Do not try to give God advice.

It is important that you pray regularly for your children. Try to take time to pray for your children at least 3-4 days per week.

Portions of Scripture for prayer

I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed. (Ps.37:25-26)

But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him and his righteousness with their children’s children (Ps.103:17)

Praise the LORD. Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands. His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. (Ps.112:1-3)

Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your sons will be like olive shoots around your table. (Ps.128:1,3)

The LORD’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous. (Prov.3:33)

He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge. (Prov.14:26)

For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. (Isa.44:3)

All your sons will be taught by the LORD, and great will be your children’s peace. (Isa.54:13)

In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost. (Matt.18:14)

The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call. (Acts 2:39)

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household. (Acts 16:31)

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. (Col.3:20)

What to pray for your children

Pray for their salvation: Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. (2 Tim.2:10) Has not the LORD made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. (Mal.2:15) In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost. (Matt.18:14)

Pray for them to grow and increase in love: Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Eph.5:2)

Pray that honesty, integrity and faithfulness will be part of their value system: May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope is in you. (Ps.25:21)

Pray that Gods Spirit of power, love and self-control will fill them and that they will be free from fear: So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. (1 Thess.5:6) There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. (1 John 4:18)

Pray that they will love the Word of God: They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. (Ps.19:10) I lift up my hands to your commands, which I love, and I meditate on your decrees. (Ps.119:48)

Pray that they will be fair in their judgment: For the LORD is righteous, he loves justice; upright men will see his face. (Ps.11:7) He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (Mic.6:8)

Pray that they will be merciful and show grace to other people: Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (Luk.6:36)

Pray for self-respect and respect for other people: Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, and honour the king. (1 Pet.2:17)

Pray for a Biblical and healthy self image: For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Eph.2:10)

Pray that they will be pure and holy before God and that they will be sexually pure until marriage: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Ps.51:10)

Pray for generosity: Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. (1 Tim.6:18-19)

Pray for the fruit of the Spirit in their lives: The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Gal.5:22-23)

Pray for humility: But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)

Pray for a sense of responsibility and to finish what they started with: For each one should carry his own load. (Gal.6:5)

Pray that they will be content and grateful: Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thess.5:18)

Pray that they will grow in faith: The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.” (Luk.17:5-6) Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (Heb.11:1)

Pray for a willingness and capacity to work: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men. (Col.3:23)

Pray for a disciplined life and that they will choose to be disciples of Jesus Christ: Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. (1 Cor. 9:24-27)

Pray for the powerful development of their prayer life, that they will learn to pray and that prayer will be a joy to them: For my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations. (Isa.56:7) And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. (Eph.6:18)

Pray that they will fearlessly take a stand against peer pressure. Pray that they will hate sin and resist temptation: No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. (1 Cor.10:13)

Pray for the working of the Sevenfold Spirit of God in their lives: The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. (Isa.11:2)

Pray that they will understand Gods plan for their lives and that they will trust Him with their lives and future: Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins. (James 4:13-17)

Pray for their physical and spiritual health and protection and also for protection against demonic attacks: May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. (1 Thess.5:23-24) And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith. But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. (2 Thess.3:2-3)

Pray for the right friends and for their future spouses: Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. (Prov.3:5-8) A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. (Prov.17:17) A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. (Prov.18:24)

Pray that they will be able to forgive and will not allow any root of bitterness to spring up in their lives: See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.(Heb.12:15)

Pray that they will witness with boldness: I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” (Rom.1:16-17) Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. (Acts 4:29)

Pray for a deeper intimacy with God: I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. (Phil.3:10-12)

Pray for tender hearts that will notice the needs of this world: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matt.28:19-20)

Pray that they will have compassion for others. That they will see the needs of other people: As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. (James 5:11)

That they will grow in grace: But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. (2 Pet.3:18)

That they will live out of a hope in God and faith in God: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Rom.15:13)

That they will have servants hearts: Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil.2:5-11)

A daily prayer for your children

Father, I pray that our children will grow in the Lord and in the power of God, that they will grow and be strong in the Holy Spirit. (Luk.1:80; 2:40)

Pour out your Spirit on our sons and daughters so that they will prophesy, and will see visions, as You promised. (Acts 2:17)

That our children will grow and become strong; be filled with wisdom, and that the grace of God will be upon them. (Luk.2:40)

That they will grow mentally and spiritually. (Luk.2:52)

That our children will be mighty in the land. (Ps.112:2)

That our children will grow in favor with God and man so that they will do your work and your works. (Luk.2:40; 52)

That our children will be able to speak God’s word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand, Lord, to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of our Lord Jesus (Acts 4:29-30) and may the Holy Spirit also testify with signs, wonders and various miracles, and may the gifts of the Holy Spirit be distributed to them according to your will. (Heb.2:4)

In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
